Enmity is the birth of friendship, so as hate is the birth of love and love is the base of existence. Sapni deals with two groups of gypsies and their main business is to catch/ fetch snakes. Fatha (Hira Lal) and Kalu (W. M. Khan) with two heads of the respective group, were on dagger drawn on the professional basis. But as the luck would have it, Reshma (Nishi), the daughter of Kalu falls in love with her father’s enemy Vikram (Prem Chopra), son of Fatha. Their love goes more than the depth of seven seas and they started dreaming of those days when they will be simple one.
On the other side, one spoiled rich man Changishah (Kharaiti) money lender, so called skivindled eyes also falls for Reshma on the strength of money. Before the annual musical competition in which both the groups were to compete for the victory. Fatha the father of Vikram spells the snake and the snake bites the brother of Reshma, who is going to participant in the musical competition.
When Kalu comes to know the unconsciousness of the son, he goes in a fix as to what will happen this year. Then, Reshma goes and wins the musical competition. Fatha’s son promises to Reshma that he will bring the snake who has bitten her brother, but on the other side Changishah the cocked eyes, takes a promise from Kalu, the father of Reshma about his marriage with his daughter on the condition if Changishah brings the same very snake. In the following night when Vikram was bringing snake, Changishah with the help of ruffians beats Vikram and snatches the snake after leaving him unconscious.
No sooner Kalu’s son gets consciousness, Changishah gets the final promise of his marriage. Just on the marriage day Vikram comes to Reshma and both elope. Everybody runs after them, but both the souls having a hide-out amidst jungle. After the complete four days of hide-out Vikram could not see Reshma without food, so he moves out to bring some eatables.
At the time of going Vikram, Reshma gives her blanket to him to wrap himself so that nobody could recognize him. Vikram out of sympathy, in the exterior of the village, gives blanket to poor, who eventually dies and Vikram on the crossing of the road runs over by a car and the owner of the car takes him to the city hospital.
In the morning when Vikram does not come back to Reshma she looks for him hither and thither, eventually she finds the same blanket she had given to Vikram previous night. She picks up, and sees the burning pyre and she is being told by a villager that this is the dead body of the same person who has worn this blanket. Now Reshma thinks and becomes sure about the death of Vikram, when he is not dead she loses the balance of her mind. But on turn of events Reshma reaches where Vikram is being treated. Both the lovers finally get united when both the families swear to end the age-old enmity.
